Several NFL player personnel employees across the league credit Oakland's offensive line with the team's offensive outburst.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has averaged 111.3 yards rushing and scored a career-high four touchdowns in the six games he played -- he missed two games with a right hamstring injury.
Yet, coach Tom Cable remained confident in the players he once presided over as the Raiders offensive line coach. He said he was more "disappointed than worried."
"That (Jared) Veldheer kid has solidified the left side, which was a concern early on," another personnel director said. "The other thing that can't be overlooked is them getting Robert Gallery back. They can run at will on the left side with those two guys playing as well as they are."
Veldheer replaced Mario Henderson at left tackle six games into the season after starting at center in the opener. Jackson said Veldheer and the offensive linemen simply are playing to their potential after a slow start.
For Walker, the abrupt turnaround isn't surprising. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
"Those guys are our foundation," Jackson said. "They're starting to play the way we all envisioned them playing. I give them a lot of credit. The guys are working hard. We challenge them quite often. I know I do. I know they're challenged by their coaches because that's where it starts.
While the accolades flow forth for those who touch the ball, score the touchdowns and dominate the highlight shows, the five guys most responsible for making it possible toil in anonymity.
The Raiders offense has been nothing short of outstanding, if not unstoppable, in lopsided victories against the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks the past two games.
Running back [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], quarterback Jason Campbell, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and tight end Zach Miller spearheaded a Raiders offensive outburst that yielded 92 points and 1,053 yards the past two games.
The Raiders rushed for 567 yards and six touchdowns in those games, passed for 514 and four scores, with no turnovers and only four sacks.
The problem "through the first couple weeks was just a lack of consistency," Cable said. "That's what separates a good line from all the rest. When you look at a group that consistently does it right, then they can be pretty good. That's what that group's capable of."
The Raiders offensive line struggled quite a bit in the regular-season opener against the Titans, allowing four sacks, botching snaps, penalties, you name it.
"This is a classic example of an offensive line needing time to jell into a cohesive unit," one AFC personnel director said. "If just one player isn't holding up his end, it can wreak havoc on the whole line and make it seem as if the whole unit is in chaos. They are playing very well and look comfortable in the scheme." "Things like this take time," Walker said. "We're probably the only five guys on the field ever that have to work totally in sync with each other. We had different parts in there. We're finally jelling and getting used to each other. We're making things happen and showing up in the run game and the pass game."
Oakland Raiders' offensive line starts to take hold
"We've got to take care of our quarterback; we've got to take care of our runners. Everything we do starts with them. They've done a good job thus far, but we can even do better."
On it goes for a unit deemed by many in training camp to be devoid of enough talent to allow offensive coordinator Hue Jackson's offense to flourish. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
"The guys know where their bread is buttered at, and I guess that's all that really matters," right tackle Langston Walker said. "People that really know football realize that, if your offensive line isn't very good, probably your offensive football team isn't going to be very good." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Overall, the Raiders are second in rushing yards per game and second in overall points scored.
