Impingement syndrome occurs mainly where there is friction between the tendons against a specific part of the shoulder blade. One can compare this friction to the way a rope frays as it comes through a pulley.
People who perform many overhead arm movements such as tennis players, baseball players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and construction workers and so on sometimes experience shoulder pain caused by rotator cuff impingement syndrome. This can happen when the tendons are being pinched within or are experiencing friction on a bone spur. This kind of injury can cause the tendon to tear if left untreated.
When impingement syndrome occurs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it causes a chemical inflammation in the tendon that the patient perceives as shoulder pain. This inflammation results in what is known as tendinitis.
Even though impingement traditionally means a sharp collision, when it comes to the rotator cuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], impingement is more of a gradual process that can cause severe pain. When impingement syndrome occurs, the patient may not be able to raise their hands above their head.
Again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rotator cuff impingement occurs when the bursa, which is the lubricating sack between the shoulder blade and the rotator cuff experiences friction. It's the bursa's job to reduce the friction as the tendon slides back and forth against the bone when the shoulder is moved. Impingement syndrome can cause the bursa to experience irritation and inflammation leading to shoulder bursitis.
Impingement syndrome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tendinitis and bursitis can all happen at the same time. That's the reason why all these conditions are referred to as impingement. The treatments the same for any form of impingement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], starting pain treatments, anti-inflammatory drugs and in the case of a bad tear, surgery.
