Giants put Cruz control on IR
With Lawrence Tynes looking like he will be unable to kick on Sunday against the Lions, the Giants signed veteran kicker Shayne Graham on Saturday.
After Tynes sprained his left non-kicking ankle in practice on Friday, the Giants’ move isn’t surprising. But the corresponding move they made to sign Graham was a bit unexpected. The team placed popular rookie wide receiver Victor Cruz on injured reserve.
Cruz exploded onto the scene when he had had six catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns in his preseason debut against the Jets. No one will forget his ridiculous one-handed catch with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] draped all over him.
He finished the preseason with 15 catches for 297 yards and four touchdowns and was one of the most popular Giants after the preseason among fans.
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cruz played in just three regular season games, largely on special teams, and had no catches. He injured his hamstring on Monday and was ruled out for this week’s game.
Still, the hamstring injury didn’t appear to be a serious one. Cruz would have had difficulty getting any playing time with Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham taking most of the snaps. Also, Ramses Barden was the fourth receiver active last week in Houston, ahead of Cruz, who was inactive for the game. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Rookie Duke Calhoun now becomes the fifth wide receiver behind Barden, who will benefit the most from Cruz’s IR designation.
So Cruz’s feel-good rookie story ends abruptly but this isn’t the first time he has faced some adversity and had to sit out football. Cruz has overcome much bigger obstacles and his perennially positive attitude will get him through. Fans will just have to wait until next year to see what Cruz can do.
