Redskins Notes: Peppers, Hester Pose Issues
Another week, another challenge for Redskins left tackle Trent Williams. Having already faced DeMarcus Ware, Mario Williams and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he gets a shot at stopping Chicago’s Julius Peppers Sunday.
“I looked at the schedule before the season and saw it coming,” Williams said. “[Peppers] is 6-foot-7, fast, strong and really long arms, and that’s a really big asset to have.”
Williams, the Redskins’ fourth overall draft pick last spring,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], didn’t get much help against Ware, but was aided with running back chips or tight end double teams against the dynamic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
And now comes Peppers, who signed a six-year, $91.5 million contract ($42 million guaranteed) in the opening days of free agency.
“I think he’s handled each week very good,” quarterback Donovan McNabb said of Williams. “He works extremely hard knowing what he’s [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] going to face on Sunday. You’re talking about [facing a] Pro Bowl player and not just every other week.”
Peppers has two sacks, nine quarterback hurries and 20 tackles.
“He’s been outstanding,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “We’ve gotten special play from him. Offenses have to take notice of him on all plays.”
Said Redskins center Casey Rabach: “He opens up things for players around him. You saw [Israel Idonije] have a big game a couple weeks ago and their linebackers have always been big play-makers.” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Wary Of Hester
The last time Mike Shanahan faced Devin Hester, he scored on a 75-yard punt return and an 88-yard kickoff return in a 37-34 Chicago [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] win.
This year, Hester has scored on two punt returns (he has nine in his career, tied for second-most in NFL history with Brian Mitchell and one behind Eric Metcalf) and his 17.0-yard average is third in the league.
“We’ve got our hands full,” Shanahan said. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Shanahan said teams have mixed directional punting to pin Hester near the sideline or sacrificed distance for a longer hang time, allowing the coverage team to get downfield.
“Those great ones, though, they’re going to make plays,” Shanahan said. “You take the number of returns and number of touchdowns, you just shake your head and don’t think it’s possible.”
Said punter Hunter Smith: “Everybody has a different approach to a guy like this. The main thing is to pick a direction and go with it. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] I would say he’s arguably the most dynamic guy outside of our guy here [Brandon Banks].”
The Redskins rank 24th in punt coverage (10.8-yard average).
Smith said he likes, “just the intensity and seriousness in which they approach special teams. A lot of people think that people play special teams are the ‘also-played’ people. But here, if you’re on a special teams, you’re a starter on this team.”
