"The kids kept believing and they didn't give up," Fayetteville coach Daryl Patton said. "Brandon made a great throw to Troy right off the bat. That was just a textbook drive."
After two running plays and an incomplete pass, Whorton hit sophomore John Hunton with a 3-yard touchdown pass which tied the game with 3:44 left in the half.
Working both sides of the field, Allen drove Fayetteville to the Rebels' 26 where Max Coffin trotted out to attempt a 45-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half. Whorton, who had three consecutive come-from-behind wins in last season's postseason run, drove the Rebels' 93 yards for their go-ahead score without the help of a timeout. It was almost a repeat of last season's semifinal win against North Little Rock, where he threw a winning touchdown to beat the Charging Wildcats with 10 seconds remaining.
