Bears shuffle line while awaiting Chris Williams Jersey' return
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Bears are looking for the right fit on their offensive line until Chris Williams Jersey can return from a pulled right hamstring.
Chris Williams Jersey is inactive Sunday at Carolina, meaning he will miss his third consecutive game. As the Tribune reported earlier, the Bears are mixing it up on the offensive line. Rookie seventh-round pick J'Marcus Webb will start at right tackle in place of Kevin Shaffer. Edwin Chris Williams Jersey,NFL Jerseys, picked up at the end of preseason, will start at right guard in place of Lance Louis.
It is the third different lineup the Bears have used on the line in five games. Eventually, they want to settle on a starting five.
"Exactly, that is the goal," general manager Jerry Angelo said Sunday morning on the WBBM AM-780 pregame show. "But unfortunately we are not there yet. We are going to still play musical chairs for probably another few weeks until we get Chris back and find out more about some of our younger players. The good news is we like the players. It is just a matter now of getting the same five on the field.
"You know why that is so important, it is because all the communication that goes on on game day, and the learning that goes on through the week. If one of them fails, the other four suffer and invariably the quarterback is there as well. It is a very, very important position to have the continuity and you only get continuity by the same five playing together week in and week out."
Chris Williams Jersey spent last week working with a trainer on the side during practice. He could return to practice this week in advance of the Seattle game. But Angelo certainly makes it sound like Chris Williams Jersey will miss more time by saying the team will play musical chairs for "another few weeks."
The big question is what happens when Chris Williams Jersey returns. Does Frank Omiyale go back to right tackle? Or does he head to the sideline? It probably depends on how he does at left tackle and how Webb does at right tackle.
The offensive line needs some help and getting some momentum running the ball is one good way to start.
"You have to run the ball probably a little bit more," Angelo said. "I am not being the coach and saying that is what we are going to do, but that is one way. All offensive linemen like to run the football. The most challenging thing for any offensive lineman, what the real good ones are paid to do, is pass pro. That takes time to develop and you need to get the
experience.
"That is hard right now because we're getting the kitchen sink thrown at us because we do have some young players and there is some change with the line."
The Bears didn't have the kitchen sink thrown at them by the Giants. They allowed an NFL record nine sacks in the first half last Sunday. New York ran a zone blitz on the first sack and the last one was a nickel corner blitz, the play that Jay Cutler was injured on when Aaron Ross knocked his helmet into the turf. In between, the Giants tallied seven sacks with four-man rushes. There wasn't anything exotic about it.
The hope is they can better handle the pressure from the Panthers. |
