On defense, the Giants decided rather than go after the novice Whitehurst -- starting in place of Matt Hasselbeck, who was out with a concussion -- they would extinguish the Seahawks' running game and confuse the first-time starting quarterback in coverage. It was easy pickings. The Seahawks managed just 49 rushing yards and Whitehurst completed just 12 passes for 113 yards and was intercepted twice.
Winners of five straight, the Giants (6-2) maintained their one-game lead on the Eagles in the NFC East and matched the third largest margin of victory on the road in franchise history.
The sign said "41-7 Is that all you got?" and Justin Tuck Jersey gave the sign-maker a high-five.
The biggest scare I have is we start to get complacent, thinking every week we come out is going to be like this," Justin Tuck Jersey said.
SEATTLE -- As Justin Tuck Jersey sprinted off the field and toward the tunnel that would take him into another victorious road locker room, he glanced up, reading a sign held by a Seahawks fan, and had to smile.
The offensive line was called for only one false-start penalty, remarkable considering it underwent a major renovation. Earlier this season, center Shaun O'Hara missed three games and Adam Koets replaced him. This time, with O'Hara not on the trip because of a mid-foot sprain, Coughlin opted for more dramatic moves: Rich Seubert went from left guard to center, David Diehl went from left tackle to left guard and Shawn Andrews went from the bench to left tackle.
"We talked about starting fast and we did it," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I thought that was very good." Justin Tuck Jersey
"Any time Coach Coughlin is telling jokes in the postgame speech it's a good thing,NCAA Jerseys," Justin Tuck Jersey said.
It was such a thorough job that even Coughlin loosened up afterwards.
On defense, the Giants made Charlie Whitehurst look in every way like a quarterback in his first NFL start, allowed the Seahawks to run a mere 37 plays and nearly pitched a shutout after coasting to a 41-0 lead.
Giants rout Seahawks to stay on top of NFC
The Giants, who had come here in 2005 and 2006 and lost both times, knew once the joint gets jumping it's the loudest building in the league. Even though the Seahawks (4-4) gave the paying customers nothing to cheer about, the noise level was higher than what should be expected when such a beating is taking place.
"It was the end of the first half and I was thinking 'Gosh, when are these people going to be quiet?' We can't do much more than be up 35-0 and they were still pretty loud," guard Chris Snee said. "The second half was quiet."
There were no issues and loads of domination as the Giants compiled 30 first downs, 487 total yards and held the ball for 42:34. The most hazardous moment for the offense came in the second quarter: After Smith hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0, he posed in front of the 12th Man sign in the end zone and someone doused him with a beer.
"I think that was a Miller Lite," Smith said. "Tasted a little bit."
As the Giants hit the halfway point of their season, their concerns are mostly based on keeping a good thing going. They hit the Pacific Northwest with a coolly-efficient fury that immediately let the Seahawks and the 67,287 on hand at Qwest Field know who was boss. A 21-0 first quarter lead became a 35-0 halftime lead, leaving nothing but scraps as the Giants eased to a 41-7 victory that couldn't have been more one-sided unless the other side failed to show up.
Eli Manning clocked in with one of his most efficient games, leading his offense to touchdowns on five consecutive first-half possessions.
Manning put on a show, hitting 21 of 32 passes for 290 yards and touchdown passes to Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith and Kevin Boss. Ahmad Bradshaw ran for two touchdowns as the rushing game produced 197 yards.
